A very good and very funny presentation of social media uploaded in slideshare, one of the biggest players in this area.

In my opinion, their vision is a little too focused in the huge amount of traffic and visitors, and customers opinions and too far from the reality, but it’s true there is not a global strategy in companies which realise the importance of this fact but are too big to convice the different areas of their company that the most important is to convert happy visitors into loyal customers of their services and there is not best way (now) to do it than consider social medial in their business plan, better than another marketing channel.

As it’s said at the beggining, probably a very good desciption from Avinash Kaushik, Google is that

«social media is like teen sex. Everyone wants to do it, but nobody knows. When it’s finally done there is surprise it’s not better»

Some facts:

  • 2/3 the global internet population visit social networks
  • Time spent on social network is growing at 3 times the overall internet rate
  • Every minute are uploaded in youtube 13 hours of video; there is 1 photo per every 2 people on the planet in flickr, 3.000.000 the average number of tweets per day on twitter, 5.000.000.000 the number of minutes spent on facebook each day.
  • 5.000.000 the number of active Barack Obama supporters across 15 social networks, and $ 6.500.000 the amount of money on-line donors contributed in Obama campaign
  • If facebook were a country, it’d be the 8th most populated in the word, just ahead of Japan

Besides, social media users believe a company should have a presence in social media and, even more, interact with its users but, in spite of these facts, marketers are not used to understand how it’s working and which is the best way to be out there. They want to talk with you, but they are afraid to hear back from you, unless you want to place an order…The reason probably people in charge of talking are in the marketing department and people in charge of listening are in service or sales areas. They hardly ever talk each other…so what dou you expect? It’s a full duplex channel that befuddles one ways marketers.
